2013 Projects

At any given time, we have projects in various stages of development. Listed below are our 2013 projects.

Abernathy Bridge Removal Project removes an existing county bridge that was heavily damaged in the 2009 floods. It is being removed to restore natural stream functions and enhance salmon habitat. See the brochure (PDF) for more details and photos.

Construction traffic should be anticipated in the area during construction with minimal delays.

Funding: Salmon Recovery Funding Board, Cowlitz County

Project Engineer: Roger Mauer, P.E.

Awarded to Hoburg Enterprises LLC, Kennewick, WA for $119,483.63.

Allen Street Culvert Replacement Project at milepost 2.16 replaces a failing culvert with a appropriately sized culvert. During large flows, the stream pushes apart the culvert, which was constructed in pieces nested together. As the downstream culvert ends fall off, the stream undercuts the bank, resulting in small landslides.

Delays of up to 15 minutes should be expected.

Funding: Cowlitz County

Project Engineer: Roger Mauer, P.E.

Awarded to NW Kodiak Construction LLC, Sherwood, OR for $331,740.73

Delemeter Road Culvert Replacement Project at milepost 5.78 to 5.84 will replace an undersized culvert at a new location, upsize the culvert size and restore the creek to a more natural location, reducing conflicts with the roadway. The project will require excavation and closure of one lane to allow continued access. The new culvert will be longer and larger, reducing the likelihood of future problems. The brochure (PDF) illustrates the existing site conditions and a map of the area.

Delays of up to 15 minutes should be expected.

Funding: Cowlitz County

Project Engineer: Roger Mauer, P.E.

Awarded to Five Rivers Construction, Longview, WA for $339,565.00.

Hazel Dell Road Improvements, located at the intersections of West Side Highway and Hazel Dell Road, will improve the sight distance from Hazel Dell Road and add a turning lane from West Side Highway into Hazel Dell Road. In 2014 the first mile of Hazel Dell Road will be widened, curves straightened and hills reduced to improve visibility and safety. See the brochure (PDF) for additional project details.

Delays of up to 20 minutes should be expected.

Funding: Federal Highway Administration (Surface Transportation Program-Rural and Highway Safety Improvement Program funds), Washington State County Road Administration Board Rural Arterial Program, and Cowlitz County.

Project Engineer: Chris Andrews, P.E.

Awarded to Nutter Corporation, Vancouver, WA for $1,537,946.43.

Westside Highway Shoulder Widening and Overlay, located from the Castle Rock city limits to milepost 2.69, is charaterized by rutted pavement and narrow shoulders. The project will increase shoulder widths and grind down and replace the roadway surface. See the brochure (PDF) for additional project details.

Delays of up to 20 minutes should be expected.

Funding: Federal Highway Administration Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), Washington State County Road Administration Board Rural Arterial Program, and Cowlitz County.
