Candidate Information

The 2019 Candidate Filing Week was May 13 - 17. The next Candidate Filing Week will be May 11 - 15, 2020.

To submit a Declaration of Candidacy, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a registered voter in the district for which you are filing.
  • You must have a valid email address.
  • You must have a credit card if filing fees will be paid online.

Withdrawal of Declaration of Candidacy

A Declaration of Candidacy may be withdrawn by submitting a written request for withdrawal to the Elections Office no later than 5 p.m. on May 20, 2019. If this deadline is missed, you cannot receive an extension. Filing fees are non-refundable.

2020 Special Purpose Diking District

If Cowlitz County holds a Special Purpose Diking District Election, it will take place on February 4, 2020.

Candidate Filing Week for Special Purpose Diking Districts begins on December 9, 2019 and will end on December 13, 2019. If only one person files per position, there will not be an election.

Candidates must be registered to vote in the state of Washington and a property owner in the district.

Alternative to Filing Fees

Persons lacking sufficient funds to pay the filing fee may submit a filing fee petition. You must file in person at the Elections Office, located at 207 N 4th Avenue, Rm 107, Kelso, WA 98626. Filing fee petitions cannot be submitted online and are due no later than May 17th at 5 p.m. The amount of signatures required are based on the dollar amount of the filing fee for the position. No partial submission of payment and signatures will be accepted.
