Tire Recycling Amnesty

Tire Recycling Event PhotosThe Environmental Health Unit (EHU), in collaboration with Washington State University Extension (WSU) and Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology), hosts tire recycling amnesty events for Cowlitz County residents. The County requests funds from Ecology, which are procured through their waste tire program, to pay for the event. This ensures the recycling of tires is free to our local citizens.

When possible, the EHU attempts to host an event twice per year. The public is typically notified at least a month in advance via press releases, social media, and flyers. Prior to unloading tires, citizens are asked to estimate the number of tires brought. This data is used to determine the estimated total number of tires recycled per event.

Since starting in 2016, each event has accumulated more than 5,000 tires! A waste tire carrier, Tire Disposal & Recycling, Inc., is contracted to collect the tires, which are later cleaned, shredded, and used in a multitude of ways for things like:

  • Astro turf
  • Running tracks
  • Ballast for railroad lines
  • Waste-to-energy fuel
