[ARCHIVED] Press Release: Vehicular Homicide Case Resolves with Guilty Plea

Campbell Memorial

On December 3, 2025, Daren Bowlby pled guilty to Vehicular Homicide while under the influence of alcohol.  Court documents show that on November 21, 2024, while intoxicated, Bowlby drove the wrong way onto the southbound off-ramp of I-5 at exit 42.   Bowlby’s vehicle caused an oncoming semi-truck driven by Brian Campbell to roll over.  When immediately contacted by a witness after the collision, Campbell expressed his concern for the other driver.  As a result of the collision, Campbell died.  Bowlby’s blood-alcohol test revealed his blood alcohol level to be 0.19, above the legal limit for driving.

The Washington State Sentencing Guidelines set Bowlby’s sentencing range at 78-102 months.  The Court followed the agreed recommendation of the parties and sentenced Bowlby to 90 months in prison.  Several family members spoke at sentencing and informed the Court of many of the things Campbell had done for them and for others during his life.  Bowlby expressed remorse during his sentencing hearing.  The State was represented by Assistant Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Tony Carlow and Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Eric Bentson.

Our office appreciates the hard work of the Washington State Patrol who investigated this case, as well as our local police and fire agencies that responded to the scene and assisted.  This is a heartbreaking loss for Campbell’s family.  We wish them well during this difficult time.  We encourage all drivers to avoid driving after consuming alcohol.
