LONGVIEW, Washington — Cowlitz County residents who meet certain eligibility requirements can now apply to serve on the Cowlitz County Board of Health. In July 2022, the board will expand from three to six members in accordance with new legislation.
To be eligible, applicants must represent one of the three following categories:
• PUBLIC HEALTH, HEALTH CARE FACILITIES, OR PROVIDERS. This includes people who specialize or have worked in the health field.
• CONSUMERS OF PUBLIC HEALTH. This includes people who have experience with public health-related services and programs.
• OTHER COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDERS. This includes people who represent organizations that work with populations experiencing health inequities.
Applications are available on Cowlitz County’s website and can be submitted to the Board of Cowlitz County Commissioners in person or by mail to: 207 Fourth Ave. N Kelso, WA or emailed to: cowlitz@co.cowlitz.wa.us.
There is no deadline to submit an application. Applications will be accepted until all three positions are filled.
The Cowlitz County Board of Health oversees all matters pertaining to the preservation of life and health of people in Cowlitz County.
The board meets quarterly to hear updates from Cowlitz County Health & Human Services, which fulfills a variety of environmental and community health, human services, and administrative functions.
Changes to the Cowlitz County Board of Health come as a result of House Bill 1152, which was passed in 2021. The bill requires local boards of health to include an equal ratio of elected and non-elected members.
New members will join Cowlitz County Commissioners Arne Mortensen, Dennis Weber, and John Jabusch who already serve on the board.
