March 4 7:00 p.m.  Fishing Stories, Large and Small.  Last fall Cowlitz County Commissioner Axel Swanson led a program on hunting stories.  This time he will present another similar program about local fishing traditions.  Swanson will be assisted by a panel of fishing enthusiasts, experts and novices.  Come to hear stories about the big one that got away, or the little ones that got netted, and be prepared to add your own experiences to the discussion.
March 9 7:00 p.m.  Urban Farming in the West: A New Deal Experiment in Subsistence Homesteads.  Robert Carriker, Associate Professor of History from the University of Louisiana, will discus his new book 'Urban Farming in the West: A New Deal Experiment in Subsistence Homesteads'.  From his book, which focuses on the four projects in the far West of Arizona, California, and Washington, Mr. Carriker will present on the history of the subsistence homesteads, those proposed for Washington, and the one actually implemented in Longview.  'I'm sure that new stories, perspectives, and clarifications will arise and even though the book is completed, I recognize that the story can always be enhanced.' ' Robert Carriker.
April 1 7:00 p.m.  The Spectacular Failure of Ice Peaks National Park.  Lauren Danner, Outreach and Planning Specialist with the Washington State Historical Society, will examine the 1930's proposal to create a huge National Park stretching from Mt. St. Helens & Mt. Adams in the south through Mt. Baker in the north.  The Discussion will include recent debates about seeking National Park status for Mt. St. Helens.
May 6  7:00 p.m.  A Small Newspaper's Biggest Challenge: Covering the Eruption of Mt. St. Helens.  Former Daily News managing editor Bob Gaston will present an illustrated review of the challenges and ultimate success faced by the newspaper's staff during and following the eruption.  This program is planned to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the eruption which took place on May 1980.
June 9 7:00 p.m.  River of Promise:  Lewis and Clark on the Columbia.  Washington Stat Historical Society Director Dave Nicandri has recently completed a book about a neglected part of the Lewis and Clark journey.  It focuses on an essential goal of the expedition: to locate the headwaters of the Columbia and a water route to the Pacific.  Nicandri will provide a brief overview of this topic and sign books which will be available for purchase.
