7:00 p.m. "Memory Cranes"
For eight years Patty Wood has been folding paper cranes in memory of
American troops killed in the Iraq War. The wings of nearly 4,500
cranes each bear the name, age and rank of an American military service
member. Now that the war has ended the cranes will be displayed at the
museum beginning May 24th through the summer. For the opening of the
display there will be a short evening program at the museum in which
Patty Wood will talk about the memory cranes she created, and museum
staff will add information about how Cowlitz County has paid tribute to
the military in the past. |

Day Family Open House" All families are
welcome to stop by the museum for Memorial Day crafts and activates.
Learn how to fold paper cranes to remember our fallen troops as Patty
Wood did, make flags and flowers to place on the graves our solders on
Memorial day, and more. |

June 7 |
7:00 p.m. 'Family & Vacation Photos ' Do's, Don'ts & FAQ'. John Markon,
Daily News Editor and photographer will share tips about taking family
and vacation pictures that create appealing images for your albums or
Facebook page. This will be a mostly non-technical, illustrated
presentation that is open to questions and answers. Then, Jim Elliott,
museum office manager, and Bill Watson, museum Curator, will expand on a
previously explored topic from a heavily attended early 2011 program. In
a workshop format, they will share scanning tips and techniques, as
well as a practical walk through the process of prepare to scan your
family's pre-digital photographs, archiving and preserving these
heirloom photos, organizing your digital images (original and scanned),
and securing your library. |

At the
Mount St. Helens Visitor Center at Silver Lake starting at
9:30 a.m.
Join Christine Colasurdo, author of Return to Spirit Lake, on a
horizon-widening day trip up the Toutle River. Explore three visitor
centers, hike easy trails, and gain an understanding of how the Toutle
River valley was shaped by the volcano and the valley's human history,
with a stop for dinner at the 19 Mile House (participants purchase their
own food and beverage). To

7:00 p.m. 'A History of Radio Stations in Cowlitz County' Steve Hanson,
retired owner of KLOG / KUKN, will explore the history of radio stations
in our county from their earliest days with low-power part time
stations, on through the golden era of live DJ's, the expansion of FM,
and into current times with automation. Steve will have a panel of
other radio station operators to go through this most interesting
subject that has become a significant part of our lives. |

7:00 p.m. 'The 'Columbus Day Storm' 50 Years Later' George Miller, a Kelso
native, author, and retired National Weather Service Meteorologist, will
take us back to that day when the most destructive storm in modern
memory roared through the northwest with a vengeance. George was
on-duty that day and will share the science of what happened, as well as
what is was like to be a 'weatherman' on October 12th 1962. |
