Cheholtz and Mary Kiona of the Cowlitz

Roy I. Wilson

The story of Chief Cheholtz and Mary Kiona of the Cowlitz represents the bringing together of 175 of the history of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe.  This book describes the transition of the Cowlitz Tribe from traditional aboriginal times to the current cultural experience.  This story takes you on a journey from what it was like to live as a child in the pre-white contact native world, through the early experiences with fur trappers, missionaries and settlers, and into the twentieth century tribal relationships with the federal government.

Roy I. Wilson, an enrolled member of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe. currently serves as chairman of the Tribal Council, and as the tribe's traditional spiritual leader. He has been the tribe's storyteller at tribal meetings for many years. He has edited this collection of Cowlitz Tribal legends as requested by the Tribal Council.
