Meet the Commissioners
Michael Karnofski, District 1

Mike took office on September 1, 2010, to fulfill an unexpired term on the Board. Mike was re-elected to the Board on January 1, 2013. His four year term expires December 31, 2016. Mike retired from Weyerhaeuser after 37 years working in a variety of positions, including environmental manager, utilities operations manager, human resources manager, and region services manager. Mike is also active in the community as a member of the Cowlitz Economic Development Council Executive Board and United Way Board. Mike's BOCC assignments include: District Court, Prosecutor, Public Defense, Public Works, Superior Court, and Sheriff.  Other committee assignments include: Law and Justice Council, Law Library, Park Board, Pathways 2020, Title III Local Emergency Planning Committee, Finance Committee, Workforce Development Council, Solid Waste Governance Committee, Washington Counties Insurance Fund, 432/433 Advisory Board, Community Economic Revitalization Board, and Freight Mobility Strategic Investment Board.

Dennis Weber, District 2

Dennis started his first term on January 1, 2013. Dennis served on the Longview City Council from 2002 to 2012 before being elected to the Board of County Commissioners. Dennis previously served as the Land Use Hearings Officer for the City of Kalama 
from 2000 to 2012. Dennis also served as the President of the Longview Education Association from 2010 to 2012. Dennis is currently an Officer of the Longview Early Edition Rotary Club. Dennis plays the violin for the Longview Symphony. He is the Commissioner liaison for Building and Planning, Coroner, Health & Human Services, Human Resources, IT/GIS, and Financial Management. His board and committee assignments include: Comm. Center 911 Council and 911 E-Board, Cowlitz Transit Authority, Disability Board, Emergency Management Advisory Council, Kelso-Longview Chamber Board of Directors, Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board, and the Airport Authority Board.

Joe Gardner, District 3

Joe started his first term on January 1, 2015. His current term expires December 31, 2019.  Before becoming commissioner, Joe owned and operated an excavation service business in Toutle.  Previously he worked at the Washington State Patrol and Department of Transportation. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Communications.  Joe is married with one daughter, manages a family tree farm, and enjoys fishing on the Toutle River.  Joe’s BOCC assignments include the Assessor, Auditor, Clerk, Treasurer, Corrections, Event Center, Museum, and WSU Extension. Joe’s board and committee assignments include the Big Idea Board, Castle Rock/Toutle Regional Water System Board, Clean Air Agency, Fair Board, Public Facilities Board, Rodeo Board, Lodging Tax Advisory Committee, Silver Lake Watershed Advisory Council, and the Weed Board.
