Local Recreational Opportunities

Description of the Program

The Health Education program promotes and encourages moderate physical activity on a consistent basis. One of the ways to achieve this is to participate in a recreational activity.

Many parks and wilderness areas exist in Cowlitz County for hiking, walking, baseball, bicycling, horseback riding, playing frisbee and other activities. There are also many fitness centers and sports complexes that offer swimming, water skiing, horseback riding, cross country skiing, tennis, racquetball, baseball, basketball, bowling and golf.

Initiating a walking program is an excellent way to increase physical fitness. Even 15 minutes of walking a day has significant health benefits. Walking is a natural activity, which can be done anywhere, any time, and is low impact, low-cost,  and has social benefits. Walking can become a family activity, e.g., parents can walk their children to playgrounds via trails in Cowlitz County. Trails that lead to playgrounds include Castle Rock, Lake Sacajawea, and Coweeman.
