Small Farms / Community Horticulture

Master Gardeners

If you have any plant or insect questions, the Master Gardeners can answer questions year-round about the plant problems you find in your yard or gardens.  Our answers are always based on research, not guesswork or folklore.  Master Gardeners are present weekly at clinics at the Extension office to answer questions.

4-H Youth Development

4-H youth program in Cowlitz County emphasizes three basic life skills: competency, coping, and contributory. Competency skills are: learning and using accepted practices for mental, physical, emotional, and social health; exploring job opportunities; acquiring skills and knowledge in science or art; and practicing skills related to the environment. Coping skills are: acquiring a positive self-concept; learning to respect and get along with people; and developing productive use of leisure time. Contributory skills include those where youths: learn skills and fulfill leadership roles; participate in community affairs; and develop as individuals and leaders.  If you would like to know more, please call Jennifer Leach at

Food $ense

The Food$ense program provides nutrition education to elementary students in eligible schools throughout Cowlitz County.

Food Safety & Preservation

Consumers can contact us with questions concerning handling food safely at home, as well as purchasing, storing, preparing and preserving food safely.  In addition, we provide training for food service employees in handling, preparing and serving foods safely.

Person In Charge is a 4 hour workshop to help shift leaders, managers, supervisors, and owners address the major food safety practices and requirements of a Person In charge.

Pressure gauge testing is offered in the spring. 


Small Business Development Center


Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) provide a wide array of technical assistance to small businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs supporting business performance and sustainability and enhancing the creation of new businesses entities. 
 SBDCs provide services such as development of business plans, manufacturing assistance, financial packages, and procurement contracts. Special emphasis areas include international trade and export assistance; e-commerce; technology transfer; assistance for veterans, including reservists, active duty, and disabled personnel returning from deployment; disaster recovery assistance; IRS, EPA, and OSHA regulatory compliance; research and development as well as market research.
